Memories of the Pharmacy
Founded in 1804, under the name “Drogaria Félix & Filho”, the pharmacy was dedicated to the production of plant and animal origin medicines to treat minor diseases. In 1890 it was acquired by the medical doctor and pharmacist Rodrigo Moreno, changing its name to Pharmacy S. Domingos. The name we know today dates to 1928, when the pharmacy passed to his nephew António Moreno.
The iron facade of the building dates to the 19th century and has a unique architectural style, where we can contemplate the symbol of Hygia, a symbol of the pharmaceutical profession, consisting of a snake that represents wisdom and a cup, which represents healing.
Moreno Pharmacy was a pioneer in its own production of medicines, in the form of powders, vaginal eggs, creams, ointments, tablets or syrups. Some examples are vimergol, for the treatment of syphilis or “Doce Alivio – sweet relief”, which is a laxative and still exists today.
There are several pieces that also crossed these times, many of which are present in the space “Memórias da Pharmácia” (a little museum that can be found inside the pharmacy).
Moreno Pharmacy in the media
